چکیده

We develop the view that inflection is driven partly by non-phonological analogy and that non-phonological information is of particular importance to the inflection of non-canonical roots, which in the view of Marcus, Brinkmann, Clahsen, Wiese and Pinker (1995) are inflected by a symbolic rule process. We used the Dutch plural to evaluate these claims. An analysis of corpus data shows that a model using non-phonological information (orthography) produces significantly fewer errors on plurals of non-canonical Dutch nouns, in particular borrowings, than a model that includes only phonological information. Moreover, we show that a double default system, as proposed by Pinker (1999), does not offer an advantage over the latter model. A second study, examining the use of orthography in an online plural production task, shows that, in Dutch, the chosen pseudoword plural is significantly affected by non-phonological information. A final simulation study confirms that these results are in line with a model of inflectional morphology that explains the inflection of non-canonical roots by non-phonological analogy instead of a default rule process. A Memory-Based Learning Model of Dutch Plural Inflection

A common observation in studies of inflectional morphology is that words which are atypical members of their syntactic class often take a regular inflection, independent of their phonology. For example, in English we would say that the plural of the surname mann is manns although it has the same phonology as the noun man which has the irregular plural men. The same goes for the borrowed word ta...

Memory-based Learning Models of Inflectional Morphology: a Methodological Case Study

The paper investigates the memory-based learning (MBL) paradigm as a model of productive linguistic behavior in the domain of Dutch noun plural inflection. We first sketch the origin and background of the MBL approach, to then provide a short overview of Dutch noun plural inflection along with a detailed description of the use of MBL models for inflectional morphology. Results of a large number...

Lexical storage and regular processes

Clahsen’s claim that output forms of productive processes are never listed in the lexicon is a consequence of the rule/list fallacy, empirically incorrect, and not necessary for the hypothesis that the human language faculty has a dual structure, that is, a lexicon and a set of rules. The basic claim made by Clahsen is that there are processing differences between regular and irregular inflecti...

A Multivariate Analysis of Morphological Variation in Plural Inflection in North Sea Germanic Languages

The present study explores the variation in the plural inflection of eight varieties of Frisian and English, focusing on the irregular plural formations. The aim of the study is to identify and assess the significance of the factors which contributed to the preservation and emergence of irregular plural patterns in the investigated varieties. Multivariate regression analysis, which was employed...
